My parent was admitted to the ward extremely ill discussions regarding DNR took place within hours of her being admitted . The next discussion we had, after not seeing my parent for a week due to restrictions, was to try and convince us that end of life pathway was the only way open to us. How does this hospital expect relative to engage with discussions about end of life care when they won't allow you to visit the patient to see their condition for yourself, this is made even more difficult by tactless comments such as "I want to get this over with by Friday" and "well she is very heavy" ! There are some good nursing staff but there good work is overshadowed by the many who feel they are doing you a favour by treating your elderly relative , tutting and sighing when you telephone , giving you the information about the wrong patient, not taking into account the patents existing disabilities, excessive noise so telephone calls can't be heard, sensitive meetings being held with doors opening out onto busy corridors, hostile attitude when you raise issues, and lack of empathy. You can't expect any relative to agree to ending active treatment for their relative when the last time you saw them they were fine and pottering around the garden , you have to accept that relatives will want to see their loved ones before making any plans...........covid or no covid these are patients and they have not been incarcerated . Telling a relative well if you chose to go down the fast tract end of life pathway you can see your relative whenever you like but if you don't agree with us then you have to stick to the covid restrictions smacks of blackmail
