Review of Talking Therapies (OLD)
24th January 2023

Although I was grateful to receive the CBT sessions from Talking Therapies, I would have liked to been offered 1:1 counseling to address my on-going mental health issues/past issues. Also, it was convenient to receive online remote sessions, but my preference would be in-person sessions, to get the most out of the sessions with better body language etc and also be without the technology glitches.

My experience with Talking Therapies has been excellent. I cannot describe how much it has helped and supported me, I already feel so much better and that I can cope with my caring responsibilities. My therapist has been so kind and caring, I am so grateful for her help and support, I know that it will help me in every aspect of my life for many years to come.

Kind and friendly teams that worked with us to better understand our issues and also help us to understand them better. Had great advice, tips and app recommendations.

Suggested improvements
As it was all done online I feel that an opportunity to have one or two sessions face to face (in the real world) could have been of benefit.

The session was good but nothing different from information sent prior to session. I’ve been diagnosed with coeliac disease for several months so may have been more useful earlier on. The slides about labels felt a bit basic for an adult group. Information packs should be reviewed before sending as included several vouchers for taster packs- cannot order this if not eligible for foods on prescription. A lot of interference from the dietitian’s microphone, another of the group pointed this out a few times.

Suggested improvements
Review content of pack sent, offer session earlier on. Maybe offer session as an extra rather than a standard as did not feel I gained any extra information.

Apologies it has taken so long, about three hours after receiving this survey I received bad news about my mother's health which was really upsetting but also means my health may be at risk. I also was advised to visit the doctor about a lesion which is under watch. I thought this was a good opportunity to put the relapse prevention plan in place and feedback afterwards. Whilst I have had anxious and upsetting moments I'm pleased to say these haven't manifest into panic attacks or the need to seek medication (I'd actually say I've barely lapsed and certainly not relapsed!). I wasn't ever a fan of therapy but something I repeatedly said and thought was how [name removed] was able to listen and find an exercise to help me manage that situation - every time. I even started to find the sessions really educational and apply what I've learnt in everyday situations. Whilst [name removed] used standard CBT methods, his ability to bring that to life and personalise it I found pretty exceptional and without his ability to do that, I'm not sure TT would have worked for me. It's becoming habit that I ask myself if my worry or thought is hypothetical, or deploying the worry tree technique and it really has made a difference. [name removed] clearly explained in many different ways using different analogies the difference between feeling anxious and when it becomes a disorder and more and more I'm able to differentiate between whether what I'm feeling is okay vs a hypothetical worry. Moreover, I'm now doing things I used to enjoy, even from years ago following [name removed]s's encouragement. Only [name removed] will understand but I'm playing the Piano everyday and have signed up for flute and saxophone lessons. I've also booked a long haul holiday and am booking a scuba refresher. I've gone from a year of 'what if' and avoidance to, in the words of [name removed], saying "bring it on!". I don't feel completely healed, I'm not sure if I ever will be in today's world, but I certainly feel more equipped to manage. Thank you [name removed]. With regards to the process, I was really impressed at how quickly things moved from my first tranche of treatment with silvercloud and my supporter through to being referred to [name removed]. I was ready to use private healthcare as the perception is mental health referrals can take months, but as requested by my GP, I tried the NHS route and I personally think the service I have received has been outstanding and cannot be beaten. Despite feeling personally out of control at the time, I was very much part of this process and treated very well throughout the whole process. I also found the video calling approach absolutely fine, in fact I think I probably engaged more in my own environment.

The therapists I have spoken to have always been friendly and supportive, despite my concerns about my mental health and daily struggles

Suggested improvements
The resources provided have been helpful, but I still have problems with consistently getting a good night’s sleep. I have therefore been referred to a mindfulness course, which I hope will improve the situation.

My therapist only spoke with me for 30 mins once every three weeks. The face to face platform to speak to my therapist failed multiple times. As someone suffering from severe anxiety and depression, the level of care given was poor.

Suggested improvements
Because I was only slotted in once every three weeks it felt like I was talking to a stranger. Make equipment work on Teams. A Therapist with more anxiety knowledge/training to provide help was needed.

When I was signed up for this service, the options were a 121 session or as a group. I thought I would leave my comfort zone and go for group. There were major issues completing the hard to edit forms and so I missed the early sessions, only to be sent a link to a video. The online forms finally became easy to use in time for the end of the sessions! Only then was it clear to me that a 'group session' was just a link to a video of two people doing a powerpoint and not any type of interactive session with multiple people involved. I would like to start this process again as a 121 session please.

Suggested improvements
make it clear that group sessions are not actual interactive sessions with multiple people, but multiple people watching folks do powerpoint.
