Review of Talking Therapies
28th May 2024

As someone who is alone and struggles every day with their mental health, I just wanted to someone to be able to talk to. I have been in and out of Talking Therapies at various points over the past six or so years. During this time I found the therapy which focussed on one on one counselling really helped me to retain a steady mind and afforded me a level of self confidence which meant I could go out and be part of the world again. Unfortunately the counselling was always limited to a certain number of sessions and, just as I felt that I was making some progress and my voice was being heard, it all ended and I was alone with the unhelpful and self destructive thoughts unchallenged once more. Subsequent multiple self referrals to Talking Therapies have proven to be a disheartening, staggered and confusing process, as you have to go back to the beginning again and re-explain your sadness. Perceived progress, continuity of care and, ultimately, continued rehabilitation suffer as a result. I have found in the last five months in particular, contact from TT was all over the shop and I never really knew where I stood. I found it difficult to keep track of who was going to call me when. Please don’t get me wrong; I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the kindness of your efforts and the support Talking Therapies and the NHS have given me over the years. You guys have helped immeasurably and, on some occasions, you have literally saved my life, when I was close to committing suicide. I also appreciate that you are grossly underfunded by the current government and resources are therefore tight.

Suggested improvements
For people like myself, who have self referred having already completed certain forms of therapy such as CBT with Talking Therapies, please consider continuity of care and listen to what the requested needs of the patient/subject/client are. This would go a long way in helping people like myself to recover more effectively. Please also keep appointment communication simple and via email or text.

There was a problem with my left leg/heel so treatment on my right leg was minimal. Had previously been discharged from same unit for my left foot which has recurred due to the problem with the right leg which is being treated. Needing to refer back to GP. Very disappointing .

Suggested improvements
Could have been referred instead of having to see own GP and start the ball rolling on my left heel. A scan is needed. This was mentioned initially when first I saw [name removed] at the MSK unit within the university of Reading .
