Terrible experience at St. Marks hospital. Overall standard of care is appalling. I experienced and witnessed a culture where patient care definitely does not come first. This needs to change, the patient should always come first. The doctors, nurses, and other medical staff need retraining, there is lack of respect for patients and dignity is not considered. The toilets were in disgusting and dirty states on many, many occasions. The doctors and nurses did not listen and were rude. Why? The care I received was awful, the distress was caused as much by the lack of care and respect by staff at St. Marks as my illnesses. I was made incredibly stressed by appalling standards, this is not good for wellbeing of patients. I would never allow my relatives to be treated at St. Marks. The patient should always be heard, respected, and have concerns dealt with swiftly. There is no proactive system to check standards or care being received. I was discharged without seeing a doctor as I was in the toilet. No explanation of what was done during an operation, no information on a follow up, discharged by a junior by paper, no pain relief for home, I had to chase this personally myself after I came out of the toilet. Bear in mind his is a bowel disease hospital, off course people are going to be in the toilet. The nurse, and even the sister could not give me an answer as to why I was discharged by a junior doctor via a piece of signed paper, without seeing anyone, and without any of points above being addressed. The sister was rude and attempted to be dismissive, until she realised that I wasn't stupid. Terrible. I hope you change and improve standards. I'll be writing to my member of parliament. Terrible arrogance by both nurses and doctors, a complete lack of respect for patients and their health needs. Patients come first, that's why the hospital and nurses are there, for the patients, things need to tightened up so that poor care and staff that do not care are not allowed to be there.
