I was admitted for colorectal surgery and was made welcome on the pre op day of admission. I was seen by the stoma nurse ahead of surgery in case a colostomy was necessary whilst in theatre. I thought this was helpful to prepare a patient otherwise they may be distressed if they came round and it had been done . I was happy about visiting hours as they were flexible enough to cover most people's needs and I did not find it too noisy or disturbing. My surgeon came on pre op day to go over the procedure again so I was fully aware of what would be done. I was fortunate enough to be operated on early next morning and my prep was calm and efficient with surgical team introducing themselves and quickly getting me into theatre to reduce any anxiety building up. Surgery was excellent and I was well monitored by staff afterwards Daily visits by my surgeon or other doctor were reassuring but we're often very quick. When allowed to eat I found the choice and quality of food very good and really enjoyed having an appetite again after many months of feeling ill. Ward assistants were kind and professional despite long hours on their feet and helped me to gain more independence daily pleased if you were making an effort yourself. My discharge went smoothly without being rushed If I had known in advance how positive my hospital stay would be I would not have been so worried and anxious. The only point I can think of to perhaps improve on was the lateness and variation in the night time medicine round. One night it was midnight and another two were also late so patients may not be able to settle until they have had their medication. But this was a minor issue and staff were extremely careful in dispensing and patient identity checks were constantly made right through my stay.
