From the first consultation to the final one, Mr Kalkur always took time to discuss my case, showing empathy and compassion. Every clinic appointment was friendly, relaxed, thorough and I never felt rushed. He encouraged me to research all options from those he suggested before making a decision regarding my treatment plan. Mr Kalkur is friendly, approachable and always gives a first class service. He was happy to answer any questions by email or telephone throughout the 9 months I was in his care. Following my operation Mr Kalkur made time to visit me to confirm the outcome and answer questions I had regarding my recovery. The follow up clinic appointment was informative and supportive. He is a truly amazing Consultant, which is what you would hope for when you visit the Hospital. He is professional, efficient and caring. I feel very blessed that I was under his care and would highly recommend him. MC

I have been shown great courtesy.respect and empathy by all the staff of the Southend Breast care clinic, Oncology and Radiotherapy Departments, following my diagnosis of early breast cancer in April 2016. In particular I would like to mention my surgeon Mr Harun Thomas, who has a lovely gentle, reassuring manner. I felt involved in the decision making, treated with great kindness and respect, and am extremely pleased with the outcome of the mammoplasty which Mr Thomas carried out. My heartfelt thanks. He is backed up by a wonderful team of Breast care nurses, and all the ladies on reception are so welcoming and friendly too. A great team, who make a very scary situation much easier to cope with, as do the wonderful charities and voluntary teams who support their live-saving work. Thank you so much. Susan Sleigh-Johnson

I had surgery for breast cancer at the very end of August 2016 and the doctor and his team were superb. Everyone involved in my care in the breast care unit were brilliant, as were the staff in the Day Surgery Unit. However, I believe that breast surgery should involve an overnight stay in hospital, rather than a day stay and that the patient should not be discharged as soon as possible after the operation. I was released from hospital an hour and a half after coming round in the recovery room and was a total zombie, hardly to able to walk to the car and my husband was very concerned as to how he should support me due to the consequences of the surgery and the fact that my under arm dressing was full of blood, so he obviously couldn't support me under that arm. I was totally in his hands for the first 24 hours after the operation, due to the shock of the whole scenario. Although the breast care nurses were always available at the end of the phone, surgery for breast cancer is a very personal experience and there was no post operative care until my follow-up appointment with the surgeon, almost a fortnight later. Having to remove the dressings on my own, 48 hours after surgery was very traumatic. It was frightening, as I had no idea what I would find underneath, eg, the stitches etc, so I was petrified that I might re-open the wounds. When I finally managed to remove them both, I just howled when I saw the results of what I had left of my breast and felt very alone and isolated. Indeed, I was alone, because I did not want my husband to see how I looked, before I had seen this myself and come to terms with how I would look from hereonin. If only a district nurse had visited me, just the once following surgery, to remove the dressings, I would have felt in safe hands and would probably have laughed at the state of my breast, as I am a very positive and strong person under normal circumstances. There are also many questions to be asked over at least the first 24 hours post surgery and if I had been kept in hospital overnight, I would have been able to ask the nursing staff and recovered well enough to go home, with confidence to move on and recover. Please, please, Southend Hospital, do bear this in mind in future, as breast cancer is a very personal and life changing illness and just this extra bit of after care would make such a difference to women in the future.

From the moment I walked through the door on my 1st appointment, feeling slightly nervous. I was greeted by welcoming reception staff, who behaved in a professional manner. The environment was clean, bright and welcoming. The Breast care Nurses were caring and showed passionate care. I felt supported from the very beginning.

After my recent stay at Southend General I was extremely happy with the care that I was given and would have no concerns about using the hospital in the future.

My sister recently had a mastectomy at Southend University Hospital. Her treatment was first rate. From the wonderful surgeon to the little girl who took her to the operating theatre she was treated so well and with dignity and respect. This awful experience she had to go through was made so much better by all involved. We, as a family, are truly grateful.

Staff care was fine, but lack of communication to patients. I was lying on a bed with suspected lower spinal trauma so unable to move. Took 2 hours to get an x-ray and was left in a corridor unattended, along with many others. No communication or idea of where in the queue - maybe an updating display board. When you are lying a bed worrying if you will be okay it is very much like you have been abandoned - someone in admin should try it to see from a patient's perspective. Staff all very helpful, but system is shaky.

I have been treated at southend hospital in the last 6 months - the maternity ward and A&E. The maternity ward provides great service, specifically the midwife and trainee midwife I was looked after by. The safe arrival of our baby and the care provided during and after my labour was second to none. The timeliness of assessment and treatment whilst visiting A&E was also to a high standard. My visit was compelted within an hour and at no point did I feel that it was rushed.
