The ward was over crowded and understaffed. The staff played the radio loudly in the middle of the night and talked constantly. Little attempt was made to be quiet for patients and their babies. Pain relief was often slow to be administered, meaning that it was ineffective by the time it was taken as the pain was too severe. Staff laughed at me for forgetting to remove my post-surgical stockings before going for a shower. Curtains did not surround the beds properly and it was very difficult to get out of bed after a c-section with dignity, particularly when other patients’ partners were around. Nobody ever cleaned my table and there was no equipment available for me to do it myself. There was a lack of appreciation for the fact that I am an older mother and this meant my recovery was slower than when I had children in my 20s.

Suggested improvements
A more quiet, peaceful environment is needed, particularly at night. Cleaning wipes or similar should be available for patients to wipe their own table. Patient medical information should not be discussed loudly and openly by staff.
