After a short stay in casualty on a busy Saturday evening I was assessed and moved to the medical assessment unit where I was taken to a bed, settled in and given pain relief. The staff on this ward were very professional and iextremely good at there jobs. They made me and my wife aware of what was happening which was very comforting. The following morning I was seen by doctor miss Patel who after examining me told me I would be moved to ward 5 were I would be looked after while they arranged a scan. The staff on ward 5 were also excellent at there jobs making me feel really comfortable, nothing was to much trouble for the staff day and night, they work so hard. After having the scan, miss Patel came to see me with my results and set of a course of treatment. As I was in a bit of pain and because I don't live in barrow, I was advised to stay in for a few days.I can't praise miss Patel and her staff enough for the way I was looked after. Also the treatment and information I was giving on discharge was first class.

Throughout my many visits to this hospital I have always been treated with great care. I can find no fault with any of the wards; nursing and medical staff have been excellent.

My recent stay in this hospital was extremely positive. I was admitted to the Acute Medical Unit as an emergency whilst on holiday and was under the care of Dr Ines Didoukh who was professional, kind, informative and thorough. She took the time to explain to me what she thought was going on and was extremely diligent in following up my test results with appropriate documentation and signposting my GP to relevant follow up actions. All of the nursing and ancillary staff that I encountered both in A&E and in the Acute Medical Unit were warm, friendly and humorous and did their absolute best to make my stay as comfortable as possible. Thank you to you all for a first class service.

Review of FGH Intensive Care Unit written by a patient

Total professionalism from all staff and a really friendly bunch. They made my stay as comfortable as it possibly could be by their caring nature and I can not thank them enough. The only negative experience I had and quite an important one, was the lack of patient toilet on the ward. When I was able to walk to the toilet I had to use the visitor one in the visitors waiting room, which was not ideal when people were sat in there and I was just in my gown and had 3 drainage bags dangling down from me. So after experiencing that on a couple of occasions I had to resort to using the Commode regularly, which is certainly not ideal when you are encouraged to become as mobile as soon as possible to improve your circulation and well being. Please install a patient toilet in ICU as a matter of urgency, it really needs one.

Ward 9 and AMU. The nursing staff were excellent. The ancillary staff were caring and humorous which helped. The Doctors varied widely. Dr L Didoukh was excellent, taking the time to explain and treating me like an individual. My other main Doctor knew her stuff but wanted to be in an out as quick as possible. This is not that helpful because whilst on the surface it may seem efficient, what actually happens is the customer cannot remember all that is said and requires further clarification. I think that all patients appreciate how busy some doctors are but that should not be the problem of the patient. General Comments. What I describe as "Business Professionalism" was sorely lacking. I witnessed one incident when about ten people were around a patient who was in for a complex investigation. The consultant kept taking phone calls that were obviously not to do with that patient. The one doctor who had obviously thoroughly read the patients file was general spoken over. Of the others 3 appeared to be disinterested, 2 asleep and 3 playing computer games. Disgraceful,no structure, no control, no sign of any previous plan or discussion. The patient was lost! The following day a team of three came. Consultant speaking, one taking notes and the other listening. A plan was explained and the patient understood. Be very careful about talking about DNR's. An intelligent person was asked on three consecutive days about his view. The first was well explained, the second was a follow up but was in his face, the third was from a completely different Doctor. The patient was left in a state of panic. My own experience was generally good. Unfortunately it was spoilt by a shocking failure to enter my discharge notes. Amongst all the tables the actual notes were two lines. This did inconvenience me but the real issue was that I took up a bed that presumably was needed. Suggestions: Doctors should introduce themselves slowly and clearly. Doctors should not introduce themselves by telling the patient how busy they are. It does not help the patient and it is not the problem of the patient. Do not promise what you cannot deliver. This is a timing issue. Do not say that you will come back this afternoon, when at best it will be tomorrow. This is all pretty basic and with some thought and attitude would, in my opinion, help improve what is an amazing, wonderful, organisation.

The staff at FGH were, almost without exception, caring and professional. As it was my first time as an in-patient I was surprised and delighted at the level of commitment and competence of the staff. The nursing staff were caring and hard working, I have nothing but praise for them.
