I was skeptical at first that my exercises would work but I was proved wrong. Just because they are easy, that does not mean they won't work

My relative was left lying in urine-soaked bed on several occasions. Relative was unwashed on many occasions. Some staff/nurses very defensive and aggressive. Do not welcome family queries. Other staff members pleasant and helpful, but overall culture of defensiveness and reluctance. Buzzers ignored for long time periods. Some staff more interested in moaning about their workload than helping patients. Lack of confidentiality - staff use phone on ward to call to discuss patients' plans, yet office is only a few metres away. Patients given other people's clothing. Supplies and equipment left lying around presenting trip hazards. Alcohol hand gel units frequently empty. Cafe is pleasant with helpful staff. Grounds are nice. Wards are overcrowded, with barely room between beds for visitors' chairs. No privacy for patients. Any query is met with a response of 'What's wrong/what's wrong now?' rather than 'What can I help you with?' Staff don't wear name badges, so difficult to know to whom one is speaking. Patients not treated as individuals, but as part of a process designed around the needs of staff and the hospital. Poor equipment (e.g. wheelchairs with uninflated tyres, no foot rests, needing adjustments) Staff very clear of demarcations and quick to point out the limits of their job (e.g. It's not my job to report this piece of equipment faulty.) The good staff struggle to shine above the negativity generated by the poor staff. A real culture of 'that's how we do things here and nothing is going to change'. Paperwork a priority over patient care. Staff cluster together at work station and chat about non-work related matters. Physio and Occupational Health staff are great. Most staff are good, hard-working and helpful but too many staff members are not, and they tend to have a commanding presence which sets the mood and tone of the hospital. Dreary sitting room with chairs around the walls, a TV (when it works), old magazines and 1970s LPs lying around. No stimulation offered to patients. If your relative needs care, avoid this hospital if you can. Don't be fobbed off by being told that it's the only facility available as it isn't.
