The standard of care and promptness in referrals by the doctors and nurses is very good overall. However as an over - 70 year old (male) patient, I feel that the reception staff really do need to review their attitude to patients. They seem unable or unwilling to help with relatively simple problems and quite often patronise patients. They seem to be acting primarily as gatekeepers to the doctors - I note the sign in the reception area telling us not to waste the doctors' time - that plus the diffident attitude displayed by reception staff doesn't make me feel any better. I would have thought that reception should facilitate access and help solve simple problems rather than create barriers. Every time I come to the surgery I think 'this is going to be difficult.'..... Nobody (I talk to others who are patients at Portland) wants to complain because of the excellence of the doctors and nurses but a little more sensitivity at the reception desk would go a long way.
