My experience in consultations with Peter Street Surgery’s doctors is that they are continually checking the time and reminding me of the 10-minute limit – even when more time may genuinely be required to deal with a health issue. If the limit is exceeded, the doctors can become impatient and, at times, even a little short-tempered. I appreciate that doctors work under quite significant pressures but, as a patient, I have found the continual reminder of time limits at consultations to be stressful. It has made me hesitant to book appointments because I feel that asking for a consultation at Peter Street is an imposition on the doctors. At times, I have felt it preferable to attend at an A & E. Despite this apparent level of time pressure on the doctors, Peter Street apparently continues to be accepting new patients, which is puzzling. The doctors at Peter Street surgery could learn from the receptionists and nurses there, who have a more empathetic and pleasant ‘bedside manner’, while still being conscious of the time constraints they work under.
