I was diagnosed 10 years ago with bipolar with rapid cycling. Risperidone is the only medication that didn't play havoc with my self-management regime. I have to watch how much I take, as being bipolar 1 (mainly manic) and happiest when creative and brain-active, feeling dulled in my mind is offputting, to say the least. I can't take it when I have anything really intellectually demanding to do, but then I have to remember to begin taking it again when my mood plunges. Being bipolar, one tends to underestimate changes in mood. Bipolar affects the decision-making part of the brain quite significantly, so it's best to tell a carer or MH support person when one takes the decision to take more or less than the prescribed dose.
