This was prescribed for Polymyalgia Rheumatica which is pain and stiffness in the joints, mainly affecting the hips and shoulders - to the extend that normal day to day movement becomes very difficult and painful.
Almost immediate relief from this steroid and although there are side effects it must be balanced by getting back to some sort of normality.
Aim is to get you fairly quickly onto the lowest effective dose but do not stop taking it and in lowering taper very slowly.
