I am taking azathioprine to calm down my immune system from attacking my body. It is so far effective and I have few issues of the disease arising/breaking through. Be aware you will need and should have a TPMT blood test that looks for a genotype in the liver that could make taking this drug harmful to you. I, unfortunately, have one of those genotypes so the Consultant has started me on a much lower dose and regular blood tests to monitor my liver, so far so good. Also, request your cholesterol levels to be done prior to taking this drug. Mine was normal and now it is raised despite best efforts with a very low fat, low sugar, oily fish and no red meat diet. That means having to take a statin. I have hot flushes and you can feel tired and fatigued. It also changed my body odour! Despite the issues it is keeping me disease free at the moment, disease-free is alive.

Profile

Azathioprine lowers your body's immune system. The immune system helps your body fight infections. The immune system can also fight or "reject" a transplanted organ such as a liver or kidney. This is because the immune system treats the new organ as an invader. Azathioprine is used to prevent your body from rejecting a transplanted kidney. It is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
