On the day of my operation, things were not going as planned, as the imaging system was being temperamental. This meant that Mr Haleem's planned schedule was disrupted but highly pleased to say that this had no effect on his unflappable manner. Despite the disruption, I was truly amazed & extremely grateful to find him at the foot of my recovery ward bed, post op, to check that all was well, ordering oral morphine to quell any discomfort. Moreover, Mr Haleem personally took the trouble to check if I had phoned my wife to let her know of my condition. As I had just 'come around' from G.A., the answer was 'No', so he used his own personal mobile to ring my home, introduce himself to my wife, then pass the phone to me for a few words of reassurance. After the day that he must have had, for him to do this one thing alone, I am in awe. No asking nurses or orderlies to make the call, he did this himself. Not only that, the operation itself (L4-L5 decompression) has proved to be a total success, I have regained full mobility after more than 5 yrs suffering discomfort through to severe pain when simply walking, I feel taller & more upright, I am already losing some of the weight gained through lack of mobility & feel happier than I have in years. Yes, some muscles ache as they have to regain some use & strength, yes, it feels strange to walk without a limp/hobble, YES, it feels fantastic to walk around the streets or a shop without the need to find a seat after 50yds. The standard of care to which I was privileged to experience at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital was nothing short of exceptional, every single member of staff was pleasant, welcoming & helpful, with nothing being too much trouble - I even had 'my own' attending nurse, Sylvia, who said she was there to serve me. When I corrected her to say that she was not a servant & that she was HELPING me, she was so surprised & happy - she is a lovely person who brightened my couple of days in R.O.H. Mr Haleem's knowledge & skill have made massive changes to my life & better still, it is a pleasure to just know the man.
