I suffered a painful trauma to my shoulder following a fall at the start of lockdown in March 2020. I tried for many months to improve the movement and strength of my shoulder by performing regular exercises recommended by my physiotherapist, who advised that there was supraspinatus tendon damage. In May/June 2021 whilst exercising I had an unusually sharp pain in my biceps muscle which prompted me to go to A&E. Consequently I was booked in for an MRI scan which confirmed a torn supraspinatus tendon. Within a week or two I had a call from Mr. Malik's secretary inviting me to a consultation. At the meeting Mr. Malik explained that in normal circumstances a surgical fix should be undertaken within 6 months of the injury. We were now 18 months away from the initial trauma. As I am an active person and I had made good progress with the months of physiotherapy Mr. Malik offered me surgery to repair the tendon. He told me he could not guarantee success due to the length of time that had elapsed since the injury but he would do his best. I was nervous and had lots of questions which Mr. Malik made time to discuss with me. He explained that even if the surgery went well the shoulder joint would never be as good as new but hopefully improved. I opted for the surgery in August 2021 during which Mr. Malik observed that the long head of the biceps tendon was also damaged. He successfully repaired both tendons. I have had several follow up appointments with Mr. Malik over the last 12 months and I am now discharged. Following the surgery the NHS provided at least six months of physiotherapy which was very worthwhile. Since then I have had monthly meetings with a private physiotherapist who tells I now have a full range of movement in the joint. I have done my best to play my part by undertaking all of the exercises recommended by both physiotherapists and the strength of the tendons and muscles in the shoulder continue to grow. I am so grateful to Mr. Malik for his time, honesty and skill.
