I cannot say enough about my very positive experience i had before, during and after my total knee replacement even though it was cancelled twice, once due to the panademic. Mr Masud was the second specialist i saw after being transferred from Mr Davies at Morriston Hospital, he was so helpful and immediately put me at ease with his positive demeanor and atitude, answering every question i had for him which helped immensly. I had my operation at Neath, Port Talbot Hospital on 12th November 2020 but i left completing this report until now so that i can give a full and up to date account of my experience. I opted for a spinal injection before the operation but this wore off because my knee was worse than first thought so more time was needed for the operation, this meant that i had to have a general anaesthetic too. Due to this and a few minor complications i had to spend slightly longer on the ward recovering spending a total of 5 days there. On the whole the nursing care was good but some nurses certainly were not as caring or professional as others but i don't really want to go into this here. After discharge my recovery was speedy although very very painful especially for the first 3 weeks when i lost lots of sleep and felt dreadful at times due to this. I cannot reiterate enough the importance of doing your exercises especially straightening and bending your knee, although this is extremely painful the final result is well worth it, if you don't do them you may have to go back and have a manipulation or worse a knee replacement revision opertion, absolutely not recommended. Because of Covid restrictions i couldn't have physiotherapy or see a physiotherapist so i had to just get on with things at home, i did get quite regular phone calls from the Swansea physio dept though which helped. A big milestone was having my staples removed after 2 weeks which was slightly painful but resulted in me sleeping better and i felt a reduction of pain too. If i could give one bit of advice to anyone which massively helped my recovery and enabled me to get my range of movement back into my knee quickly it would be this, GET A STATIC UPRIGHT INDOOR EXERCISE BIKE. I bought one on Ebay and it brought me on leaps and bounds. It enabled me to get my leg to straighten completely and get a 125 to 130 degree bend in my knee, a tip here, lower the seat so that your knee bends more, this is painful especially early doors but by golly does it pay off. The added bonus using the bike is that it built my quads up which had wasted away somewhat due to the pain in my knee and therefore not using it as one should, in essence i had been been protecting my knee for years moving my weight to my left side and losing muscle definition and strength to boot. I had no use for my crutches after about 4 weeks or so and walked as much as i could and carried on doing the exercises especially using my static bike. I saw improvements as the weeks went by and saw Mr Masud after 2 months, he was extremely pleased with my progress and stated that my next appointment would be in November 2021, happy days. The weeks went by so quick even during this awful pandemic but i was totally pain free and now sleep like a log, walk miles over different terrain, go cycling and fishing standing for hours but i'm really looking forward to my favourite pastime which i haven't been able to do for years and that is play golf. Today being the 25th March 2021 i only realise i have a artificial knee due to the tightness around it and slight stiffness on walking first thing in the morning but i do expect this to wane as time goes by. I would like to sincerely thank Mr Masud and his team including the staff at Neath, Port Talbot Hospital for giving my full life back thus enabling me to do so much some of which i've alluded to above, none of it would have been possible without you, all of this remember during the most challenging and unprecedented times in living memory. I would recommend my surgeon Mr Saquib Masud to anyone, he his top notch and a very pleasant man indeed and in my opinion one of the best surgeons out there. Gareth Edwards.
