In 2020 following referral from my GP I consulted Mr Rajaratnam at the Schoen Clinic over problems with my knee. He diagnosed advanced osteoarthritis and gave me advice which I followed in preparation for a total knee replacement. At the pre-op meeting examination Sam advised that due to having followed his advice I should delay treatment as he “could not make a well man better”. Subsequently the problem with my knee recurred in 2023 and in early 2024 I had a total knee replacement performed at the Cleveland Clinic by Sam and his team. • The Cleveland facilities are new and first rate and the nursing staff and in-house physiotherapists skilled, attentive to patients’ needs, and invariably kind. • Sam was very aware that I was a terrified patient and at every meeting put me at ease, fully informing me about what was going on. • Dr Barry Phillips, the team anaesthetist, was kindness itself in his advance explanation of pain management procedure and above all in his follow-up visits. Without fail he would pop in before leaving for the day to check all was well, signing me off just before discharge. • Christine Howis, the team triage nurse visited me shortly before discharge and managed the initial 14 day recovery. She was always available to advise on the somewhat daunting array of medication which I had been issued, a great support. • Sam Gore, the team phsysiotherapist, treated me at home, gave advice on the use of the Physiolab chiller to reduce inflammation and kept a watching eye on my recovery keeping in touch with Christine. Mr Rajaratnam emphasises the importance of the team effort and I have to say that my experience proves his point. At every stage the skill of this outstanding surgeon was supported by the whole team. I am very grateful to have been treated by them.
