Written by a private patient

I have recently had two knee replacements by Mr Sam Rajaratnam, one on 27th Feb and the other on 27th April 2023. Both have turned out superbly due to his and his team's care. To say they are beyond expectation is not an exaggeration. As someone at the age of 73 still very committed to sport, Real Tennis and wicket keeping in cricket, his understanding of my desire to get back into sport led to focussed and sensible advice about what I could expect to do and when after the operation. It was given in a way I completely trusted and could follow, even though it involved delay to sporting involvement to enable soft tissue to recover. Unlike several of my friends who have had recent knee operations elsewhere, and suffered post surgery with pain and swelling due to the way the operation was carried out and lack of integrated post op care, I have had none at all in either knee. Part of which has not only been due to the excellent operational skill employed, but also to his anaesthetist, Dr Barry Phillips, who works with Mr Sam Rajaratnam. His information on the method of anaesthetic one could choose to have pre-op to the post - op medical care package was superb. The only pain I have suffered is stretching muscles into the full range of stretch available with completely new knees. The additional assistance suggested by Mr Rajaratnam was to use a team of specialist physios (Flexed Physio) who deal only with knees. They helped prepare my legs for the operation and post-op worked with me on a reducing scale from three times per week initially down to once per week after six weeks, as well as setting physio tasks, checking with Mr Rajaratnam when necessary, so as a patient I felt completely looked after in the post op period. The result for each knee was that I was able to walk normally after two weeks without a crutch, although I would take one with me when going outside to help on staircases or if standing for a long time. I cannot recommend Mr Sam Rajaratnam and his team highly enough for their skill and holistic approach, pre-op and post-op.
