I had a trumpet nail on my left hand, middle finger which was extremely painful. It had curled into my finger so badly that I couldn't stand to use my left hand if it were at all possible. I had to have it lanced twice because it went septic then decided on private surgery as the NHS waiting list was so long. I looked online for a surgeon who also worked for the NHS and chose Mr Trickett. I saw him in the Nuffield hospital outpatients and he gave me a few options about how he could treat it. I chose what I wanted to have done, there was no pressure to decide on any particular option. The best thing was no waiting and being able to have the surgery on Good Friday which meant no booking time off work. The surgery was more intricate than I expected and yet it wasdone under local anaesthetic. The most uncomfortable part of the whole thing was having the local anaesthetic. My finger was cut and peeled back, then the nail was removed and reshaped, the nail bed was narrowed; the intricate surgery continued and the reshaped nail put back in place to protect the nail bed whilst the new nail grew and then it was stitched and bandaged. I don't know what was done altogether, although I was offered the chance to watch (I'm too squeamish for that!) All I can say is, the result has been amazing! I have no pain in my finger; the nail is growing back beautifully and, after going for my post-op check, I realised how much work went into something so small. I am pain free and my nail is almost fully grown back. The old nail came off about 3 months after the op and it's now 5 months later and I'm really happy. Mr Trickett is a lovely man, very friendly, very informative and has a great reassuring manner as well as being a great surgeon. I cannot recommend him enough if you need a hand surgeon, go see him!
