I first saw Philip in 2012 when he diagnosed osteoarthritis in my right hip which, as a consequence, required replacement. The pain was not severe so he advised me to let him know when it became too much for me whereupon replacement would be arranged. My left hip started developing similar symptoms so I returned to see him 4 years later and it was confirmed that this also required replacement and I left under the same terms as in 2012, i.e. contact him when the pain worsened. I met Philip again two months ago when it was agreed that, armed with current x-rays, bilateral hip replacement was appropriate. I am 65 so there was some caution about choosing bilateral surgery given my age but it was agreed that the operation would proceed on that basis unless I was not in a good place after the first. Fortunately I was and both hips were successfully replaced. The operation was undertaken under spinal anesthetic with sedation although I have absolutely no recollection of the operation itself. Within an hour of awaking from the operation I was walking a little with crutches. I was in very little discomfort that day. The following day I walked up and down stairs successfully, I was in slight discomfort but honestly not that much. On day 2 after the operation I was discharged being regarded as fit for recovery at home. Discomfort was perhaps a little more but totally bearable and controlled. On day 3, we undertook a half mile walk and I was pretty mobile in our home environment, climbing stairs, etc. On day 4, we undertook a mile long walk and all was good, a little more sore at the end but totally acceptable given the circumstances. On day 5, I felt very sore and pretty exhausted so we didn't go for a walk. I don't know if this was as a result of the anesthetic final clearing my system or perhaps overdoing it on the previous days. Pain was also elevated. On day 6, all was good again and a long walk was again completed. I should mention here that post op exercises appear to be so important in aiding recovery. Today is day 9 and I feel amazing considering the not insignificant operation that I had undergone which I firmly believe is almost entirely due to Philip's skill and expertise and the methodology adopted by Philip. Philip is an amicable, dedicated and empathetic surgeon in whom I have complete trust and I thoroughly recommend him to anybody seeking treatment within his speciality.
