Written by a private patient

Mr Haldar has an excellent "bedside manner", immediately exuding an air of confidence in his expertise as well as empathy. Due to my own personal experience (prostate biopsy) I have given 4* rather than 5* as I do feel Mr Haldar should have warned me of the great discomfort (pain, frankly) of this procedure under local anaesthesia and, as a private patient, I should have been offered the option of a general anaesthetic. Only after the event did I go to google and find that general anaesthesia is in fact routinely given by many urologists for prostate biopsy, so I do wonder why this was never even mentioned as a possibility by Mr Haldar. Having said that, I really was most impressed that, after results confirmed my need for fairly urgent treatment, Mr Haldar suggested I should speak to an oncologist for probable radiotherapy, whereas I gather many in my situation are routinely recommended to suffer the many miseries of radical prostatectomy. So rather than suggesting the surgery that could have earned him a fat fee, Mr Haldar simply referred me on, to the detriment of his own bank balance. For this I am immensely grateful as, 12 months later, my treatment appears to have been successful and I still have my prostate!

Response from Mr Neil Haldar

Thank you for the kind words. I'm so happy to hear that you are well. I'm sorry that you found the prostate biopsy so painful. 99% of our patients, both privately and in our NHS department, choose to have the biopsy under local anaesthetic as it avoids a day in hospital and the side effects of a full general anaesthetic. A small proportion do prefer to have it under a general anaesthetic, and we do offer this, of course. I'm sorry that I did not make this clearer to you at the time. Wishing you all the very best in the future. Kind regards, Neil Haldar
