I am a reluctant private patient, having had great faith and experience with the NHS over many years - but at 80 years old, I don't feel I have the luxury of time to wait any longer for a NHS appointment, when unable to walk far because of pain. Mr. Butler was courteous. He retrieved previous NHS x-rays on my ankle, and pointed out the area which he felt to be the cause - he also showed me a model of the ankle bones, so that I understood. He asked where I felt the pain most - and listened. He asked me to stand, and put me through a few exercises, then asked me to sit - he then held the offending foot and moved it and put pressure on it in different ways to confirm his opinion. Mr. Butler then suggested making an appointment for a MRI scan to confirm that there was no further damage elsewhere in the ankle. Assuming his diagnosis was correct, he then would inject the appropriate area - though warning me that the beneficial effect of such an injection varied greatly person to person. He asked me what I felt? I was happy with his plan and agreed that he should go ahead. Mr. Butler then dictated what had transpired during the consultation, so that I heard and could have corrected, any details. The appointment for the MRI came through three days later. So - early days, but so far so good. I felt confident in Mr. Butler.
