There is no doubt in my mind that Mr Bircher is an excellent and very talented surgeon. With major pelvic and acetabular fractures I was initially taken to another hospital where the medics stood ringing their hand not knowing what to do. With the assistance of a friend I managed to get my notes to Mr Bircher who treated me privately. He was excellent from the beginning. The surgery was complex and I was in theatre for about six hours which I understand is normal. The xrays after the operation of all the metal are amazing and although the cut was huge I have not been left with too much of a scar. Where Mr Bircher failed was that he was not very interested in the rehabilitation phase of the process. That took about six months and I had to work very hard to be able to return to a normal level of fitness. The first physio I saw was not great and I had to look outside of hospital to find one who had the skills to help me. In this regard Mr Bircher was not so good, as far as he was concerned physio is physio and any physio will do. They won't, just as any surgeon would not have done when I needed surgery and I needed someone with talent and particular skill, so I needed a physio with particular talent and skill. It is a pity Mr Bircher does not work closely with someone who will help those he has operated on to get the best out of their surgery with equally talented physio.
