In May of this year I broke the fifth metatarsal in my right foot. I was initially treated at another hospital, first in the urgent care centre and then in a fracture clinic, and was told that there was nothing that could be done but wait for the bone to heal. I was concerned because of my previous experience of breaking a bone in my arm, which failed to heal by itself and did not heal until pins were inserted; so I decided to seek a second opinion, and booked to see Mr Kunasingam at North Downs Hospital. Mr Kunasingam listened carefully to my concerns based on my previous experience, and explained that while waiting for a longer period of time to see if the bone would heal by itself would be an option, there was also the option of surgery to pin the bone which could probably be done in a minimally invasive way. I chose the surgery, and Mr Kunasingam carried out the operation less than a week later. My pain was well controlled after the operation and I was able to go home the same day. My foot was in plaster for two weeks after the operation, then the plaster was taken off and I was given an air boot which I used for several weeks afterwards. I gradually progressed from using two crutches with the air boot to using one crutch, and then wearing trainers instead of the air boot. I had very little pain around the site of the operation, and the incisions in my foot were so tiny that three months after the operation I can barely see the scars. It's fascinating to see the difference that such a tiny pin has made. Three months after the operation, I can walk without crutches and drive my car. I haven't tried high-impact exercise yet but will be continuing to follow Mr Kunasingam's advice to set lots of small goals and gradually build up my activity level. Mr Kunasingam is calm, professional and friendly and I have felt fully involved in decisions about my care at all times. I would not hesitate to recommend him.
