After years of suffering severe pain in my right foot and also, more recently, restricted mobility and sleepless nights due to this pain, I finally underwent reconstructive surgery in February this year (2020), performed by Mr Kumar Kunasingam, Foot & Ankle Surgeon, at the West Valley Hospital, Croydon. It became immediately clear to me at my first consultation with Mr Kunasingam, after he had completed his assessment of my foot, that he understood exactly what the underlying problems were and why I had been experiencing so much pain and disability. He appeared very confident that he knew what surgery he needed to perform to correct these problems and also that this would relieve my pain and restore my mobility. Mr Kunasingam put me at ease, from the beginning, by his very kind and caring approach. I went to my first appointment with him unsure as to whether or not anything could be done surgically to relieve me of my pain, but I left with hope and with the confidence I needed to proceed with the surgery which he was proposing to perform. I also went away in no doubt that he was the surgeon to perform it for me. One thing that struck me during my first meeting with Mr Kunasingam, and then again during each of my subsequent appointments with him, was how passionate he was about his work as a Foot & Ankle Surgeon, and also how keen he appeared to be to use his special skills, including in particular minimally-invasive (keyhole) surgery, to improve the quality of life of his patients. Mr Kunasingam and his team were very caring and attentive on the day of my operation. He repeated the details of the surgery he was proposing to do on my foot and explained everything to me again. This made me feel very relaxed and confident to proceed. When I left theatre after the operation, I was again given the same high standard of care and attention. Mr Kunasingam had identified several bony deformities in my right foot, involving the first, second and third toes, as being the cause of the pain and other symptoms which I had been experiencing. Each of these separate abnormalities were then corrected by the surgery he performed and my foot now has a normal appearance. I was amazed at how much he was able to do using the keyhole approach. As well as the fact that the operation has corrected the abnormal appearance of my right foot, I have noticed that the skin on the sole of that foot is now very soft. I believe that this is undoubtedly a consequence of the operation, because the skin on this part of my foot has not been like this since I was a child. However, more important to me than all of this is the fact that the pain, with which I had suffered for years and which had affected my quality of life, has now disappeared. I would like to end by saying that I am extremely grateful to Mr Kunasingam for everything he and his team have done for me. Maura
