Written by a private patient
18th March 2024

SWLEOC was recommended to me by several people. After four NHS cancellations I decided to self refer and see a surgeon privately. That was very easy. I did spend sometime looking at the surgeons on their website. I chose Mr Craik and was not disappointed, aside from the immediate impression of his ability and knowledge I also found him to be very approachable, answering my all questions and concerns. I was a little confused by the fact I was seen as an out patient at Ashstead hospital rather than at Epsom! Ashstead is a very pleasant and comfortable hospital but I chose to have my THR at Epsom having the best of both worlds with the surgeon of my choice in an outstanding Orthopaedic centre. Mr Craik and his secretary, Philippa, bent over backwards to fit me as quickly as possible one Friday evening after the NHS list I was home by 11am the following day! If I had to make a criticism it would be about the receptionist in the waiting area when I arrived at Epsom for my op. She commented that I was very ‘lucky’. When I responded I didn’t think having to have an operation was ‘lucky’ she then announced to the whole waiting area that most people waited years for their operations. I was quite upset by her remarks and commented to my husband that maybe they didn’t like to see patients privately, I did worry as to whether I’d made the right choice. Not a very professional or good first impression. Pleased to say she was the exception, all the nurses, physio and clinicians were extremely professional and very kind. I had no qualms at all. One young man (who didn’t have a name badge) totally unbidden by anyone, wrapped me in warm blankets as I was waiting for my op. then Felix introduced himself offered me his arm, walked me to the operating theatre and what seemed like a minute later I woke up. Six weeks on I’m doing great.
