Mr Prabhu was very pleasant and conversable, making me feel at ease. I very much appreciated that, at the initial assessment meeting, he noticed a minor unrelated problem and promptly gave successful treatment, the benefits of which are lasting. However, no doubt unintentionally, the impression was conveyed that the procedure not only might be (which was understandable) but almost certainly would be traumatic at the time and extremely painful in its after-effects. This almost persuaded me into opting for levels of sedation which would have been completely unnecessary and would have had longer-lasting consequences (and incurred greater costs). It was also a little disconcerting to be offered codeine so readily, given its known negative side-effects. In fact, the procedure was very speedy and pain/discomfort afterwards was very minimal; in total, I took 3 ibroprofen and 3 and a half panadol over about 60 hours, and the last dose proved actually unnecessary. It is obviously difficult, without the benefit of prior acquaintance, to assess the potential of a patient either to tolerate calmly a medical procedure or to live with any pain and discomfort afterwards. But perhaps the full range of possibilities should be adequately voiced.
