Miss Gilkes, is a neurosurgeon specialising in skull base surgery involving the pituitary gland. I was one of her early patients when she joined the staff at the Walton Centre, Liverpool. With her team, she removed a tumour from my pituitary, just behind my eyes, performing lengthy surgery through the nostrils. Within a few hours I was able to get bathed, dressed and walk around. I felt fine, apart from a slight headache. I’d seen other medical and surgical specialists at the hospital, and frankly I as a bit dispirited, by their vagueness. It wasn’t until I saw Miss Gilkes that I was given a detailed report on my condition and told how she would tackle it. What strikes patients about Miss Gilkes, are her beautiful manners and her willingness to patiently answer questions. She’s an extraordinary women.
