Many years ago, I spent several months in a coma due to necrotising pancreatitis. It was a close run thing and dialysis was a major part of my treatment and recovery. My veins were totally shot and my blood was "like super glue". On one occasion, I had blocked up multiple machines and was in grave danger. It was a weekend, and Dr Martlet was enjoying a night at the Liverpool Philharmonic with family. A call was made and she dropped everything and came to my bedside. She found and accessed a vein (in my ankle, apparently) and I survived the night. Several months later, I attended herbclinic as an outpatient. She was visibly moved to see me on my feet and still breathing! It was emotional for us both. But I will never forget her care, warmth and humility. Thank you Vanessa, for everything!
