We were fortunate enough to have had Dr. Nawaz as our daughter’s ( now 8 years -old) paediatrician since she was just six weeks old. Dr Nawaz has a wonderfully compassionate nature combined with excellent clinical skills. His assessment of my daughter's condition was incredibly open-minded. He always considered our own observations, which helped us, when she was an infant, to initially treat her condition without invasive tests. As she grew up, Dr. Nawaz was there to guide us through diagnostic tests and approaches, and our daughter was always at the centre of each appointment, never just being talked about as if she was not in the room. He has a kind manner and ability to relate to children, always involving them in the conversation, explaining things appropriately, whilst also respecting if the child doesn’t feel like talking. When my son needed to be seen by a paediatrician too, for coeliac screening blood tests, I made sure he was referred to Dr. Nawaz. At the time of the first appointment my son was 7, and a very bright boy with a big personality and rigid views, not really convinced why he should have a screening blood test. Unknown to us at the time, our son had high- functioning autism and sensory issues, something that was not diagnosed until a few years later, as his verbal ability was so advanced. Dr. Nawaz however recognised his high cognitive ability and managed to relate to him in the right way, treating him respectfully and taking him seriously. Ultimately this child-centred approach helped to convince our son to have his coeliac screening blood test. For me as a parent it was really important to be able to trust my children’s paediatrician and to be confident in the advice I was given. Dr. Nawaz always instilled this trust, by taking the time to fully explain, consult with us and never rushing through our appointments. Equally he respected my decisions and choices, for example my decision to continue breastfeeding my daughter, even if it meant completely removing all possible allergens from my own diet. The offer of a hypo-allergenic hydrolyzed infant formula was there, but never forced upon me. I can highly recommend Dr. Nawaz, as he is one of these rare medical professionals, who have managed to combine their clinical skills with matching social communication skills and a person-centred approach.
