As an anaesthetist, I take great satisfaction in following a patient's journey from pre op assessment and explanation, through their care in theatre and recovery, and finally reviewing how patients are post operatively. It is very common for patients, and their relatives, to have worries leading up to an operation, but often these can be reduced or overcome by careful assessment and explanation of what is to come. If procedures are undertaken as an emergency it is doubly important to follow up pre op discussions after the operation to check what has been understood, and to answer any queries, as this will often help patients and their families come to a fuller understanding of the events.
