Dr Kuranage Clement Dallus Perera was the locum at the Broomfield Hospital Early Pregnancy Unit when I experienced a threatened miscarriage. Listening to him in the next room whilst I was waiting to be seen, I thought he treated the nurses and other staff around him with respect, as an equal, rather than with any self-importance. When it was my time to be seen, he asked the nurse who had done my swabs to join, which I found reassuring and provided continuity. He was knowledgable, clear in his explanations, and treated me respectfully as an adult - rather than with any paternalism. I was also deeply appreciative of his trauma-informed, consent-based care, where he provided me with a choice as to my care. I am aware that human rights in childbirth are not always respected, potentially resulting in obstetric violence. I felt safe in Dr Perera’s care, and that I could trust him to explain the options and let me decide and have autonomy over my body. As Broomfield is not my home hospital, the doctor was thoughtful and considerate to immediately provide me with a discharge letter. This made it easy for my GP to refer me to the EPU where I live, and saved me from having to go directly to A&E to get to my local EPU service. All in all, I had an excellent experience of care and could not recommend Dr Perera highly enough.
