I met with Dr. Helen Sperry regarding my 6-year-old's blocked nose and constant mouth breathing. I mentioned that my son is autistic, not yet verbal, and doesn't communicate his issues. I also told her that he has always had issues with his breathing, often falling sick in nursery and school. I don't know how long he has been mouth breathing. She dismissed all my concerns, saying that mouth breathing is very common for kids his age, which made me uncomfortable about sharing all my concerns. She said she would prescribe a medication that would take two weeks to work and help with his blocked nose. I requested a referral to an ENT specialist and indicated that I would go private. She seemed somewhat okay with giving the referral. However, when I asked for the medication she had mentioned prescribing, she refused to write the prescription. She stated that if I was going private, I wouldn't have to wait long and wouldn't need the medication. I was upset but remained quiet and left the surgery. I felt she was very grumpy. I am only writing this review to make people aware of my experience in case she treats other patients similarly. It would have been nicer if she had given me the prescription she had mentioned for my child instead of deciding we didn’t need it because I mentioned going private.
