I went to see Dr Winstock today as I have had flu symptoms for nearly two weeks for a check up and also needed a medical certificate for work. I told Dr Winstock I had gone to work the first few days of my illness but had called in sick since the 23rd. I explained that I had difficulty hearing due to the congestion in my head, but this did not stop him from talking all over me, quoting the law "you don't need a certificate for the first seven days" - and refused to listen when I tried to explain that this was day 8. He told me he couldn't give me a certificate for the next day as he couldn't tell if I would be better by then, and despite my headaches, fever and ear ache I should be well enough to go to work the next day as "most flu clears up within 7-10 days". He listened to my chest and told me it was fine despite the fact that my husband is kept awake by the wheezing I have as my congestion is so bad. In the end I left and my husband called up and explained (after being quoted the law extensively again) that as today is day eight, he should be giving me a medical certificate for today, and I am going back tomorrow for a second opinion from one of the much nicer doctors at the practice!
