This doctor left me on long term psychiatric medication because it was convenient for him, rather than looking at what might have been beneficial for me. The best thing I ever did was to walk away from him. I have been medication free now for two years, am no longer a mental health service user and am doing better now, than I have done in years. He listened to me, but if what I felt I needed didn't fit in with what he perceived to be best, it didn't happen. Psychiatrists should be there to help, not to let you achieve a medicated stability and then just leave you to stagnate. Perhaps if the focus shifted to what happened to a patient to cause the illness, rather than taking the symptoms and pigeonholing someone into a diagnosis, we'd all be better off.
