I. Was diagnosed with Stage three bowel cancer in June and had immediate surgery to attempt to remove the Tumour which unfortunately was not possible and there fore lead to a bowel bypass and the tumour left in place. The period between surgery and Oncology was sheer hell, not knowing was torture. My Wife and I travelled to Westmorland General hospital from Ulverston on the Morning of the consultation and I can tell you I was almost having a panic attack, I had myself in the Hospice by Xmas. We had to wait a while to see Dr Williamson but that didn’t matter we were there. As soon as I saw Dr Williamson I though ‘I’m going to like you” He sat us down we went to Christian name terms and away we went. Hi calm demeanour and frankness was completely calming. He went. Trough the history of the diagnosis and OUR OPTIONS which I had convinced myself I didn’t have. I asked him”Can you help me” and he said yes. I’m still palliative but I have a great treatment plan, complete faith in the team for extended prognosis. I think after twenty minuets we were laughing about something, that’s not bad for a guy who had written himself off. There are caveats and and a few maybe’s but its a plan. My moral was boosted as soon as I saw the Christie Institute on his scrubs, I knew I was in good hands. When I got back in the Car my Wife said”you look like a different man”. I felt like a different man. Things are not perfect but there’s a road ahead and great people to guide me. As an Old Pal of mine who is a Cancer survivor said to me “he NHS has lots of talented people with lots of good weapons” Thank you so much Andrew, now starting my chemo with no fear. Don’t allow this government to dismantle the NHS, its vital to us.
