I saw Dr Macnair during 2012, with an undiagnosed symptomatic popliteal DVT. Dr Macnair did not recognise the - text book, symptomatic - DVT. Dr Macnair failed to provide me with access to an NHS haematologist, after a DVT was diagnosed privately: instead he expected me to pay to access anticoagulation oversight via a hip and knee, Bupa surgeon. Even after that surgeon's PA advised that she had advised Dr Macnair in October 2012 that my care should be managed by NHS.. Dr Macnair refused to provide me with a haematology referral for oversight. Consequently I tried my MP - Andrew Lansley (who did nothing), then the hospital complaints system - which accessed the care I wanted, an NHS Haematologist - but Dr Macnair declined the care that I was asking for without informing me of his decision, and he failed to provide me access to my medical records when I repeatedly requested them in writing. My medical records relating to the DVT were 'lost' until three years later, and found a few days after the NHS ombudsman Appeal decision. He also claimed in a neurology referral that I'd had limb asymmatry investigated previously by a neurologist. Whereas I had experienced acute urinary retention and had a history of soem bladder issues, investigated by a neurologist previously. But I had never had any gait abnormality or limb asymmetry investigated by any neurologist to my knowledge. The delays in the neurology referral, meant that I ws refused key EMG tests, which I then only managed to access privately 4 1/2 years later, privately. I am now having to pay to access neurophysiotherapy privately. Whereas had Dr Macnair been open and transparent when he made my neurology referral, that test and that care, should have been accessible many years sooner. I am left with a Trendelenburg gait and re-innervation, due I believe to the delay in diagnosis of a large pelvic mass, due to the failure to access an early pelvic ultrasound and care. Dr Macnair seemed like a really decent chap. And as my GP, I genuinely liked and trusted him. Sadly, that trust was misplaced, in my experience. However, I think that he is not innately incompetent. And I believe that he is generally more competent than my experience suggests. My concerns lay more around the failure to correct mistakes, and the loss of key records, preventing fair and equitable access to medical records for me for a number of years after his care. Based on experience and interactions, I suspect that Dr Macnair is likely a much better doctor since he moved practice. So although I cannot recommend him personally, he's likely no worse than any randomly assigned GP.
