Professor Fischer is an award winning Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in vision problems relating to cataract and retinal disorders with more than 20 years of experience and more than 5000 procedures performed. He does charitable work for patient organisations (Retina International, Retina Suisse, ProRetina) and has received more than 25 awards for his work, including the L. Klein award for the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery, Senator H. Wacker award for outstanding contributions for diseases of the vitreous and retina. He received his medical doctorate for research at the University of Pennsylvania (USA). After completing his specialty and fellowship training he became Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology and continued his training at the University of Oxford, reading Clinical Neuroscience at Merton College. He is appointed Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford and holds a second appointment as Professor of Ophthalmology at one of Europe's top academic centres for eye care, the Centre for Ophthalmology Tubingen. As Principal Investigator at both Universities, he leads several clinical trials in Oxford and Tubingen and is Chief Investigator of the first global post approval study for ocular gene therapy.
