After training in Cambridge and London as an undergraduate, Dr James Smellie spent 6 months in the USA as a surgical trainee before returning to continue training as a surgeon in London, Oxford and Lillle, France. He did a travelling Fellowship in the Mayo Clinic prior to receiving his Doctorate from the University of Cambridge from research in the Immunology department of the Royal Marsden Hospital. He has been the senior endocrine and thyroid surgeon at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London for the past 20 years. Dr Smellie is also lead for hernia surgery have a particular interest in redo inguinal; female and umbilical hernia surgery. He has extensive laparoscopic experience and uses this for adrenal surgery. Outside of work he loves to ski as a family.
