This surgery no longer seems to be patient centered. I recently had a medication review with the pharmacist, who asked me to make an appointment for a blood test at the surgery. I had to collect items from pharmacy, so while I was there, I asked if I could make the appontment. I was told I could only make it via the NHS app or online. The reception area was empty; there was no-one else waiting to see the recptionist. It seemed so silly that I was there anyway - I thought I could do both things at the same time. Why couldn't I have booked the appointment there & then?

Suggested improvements
  • The service should be for patients, who should be able to access services in the way they find easiest. I do have access to the online system, so this incident was merely annoying & inconvenient, but what about people who struggle with technology. Services should be accessable to older people or those who find technology difficult for whatever reason. As well as ensuring that services are inclusive for people with disability, I would like to see how well they support older people. I have been in the surgery when I have seen people struggling to use the app & seen how frustrated they are.

I've got the NHS app which is a miracle at my age. The receptionists are excellent again kind and helpful and have gone beyond good as I have been very ill . Thankfully I am much better now and when I was in for a routine appt the receptionist, that helped me when I collapsed, came over and took my hand and asked how I was now. So lovely and shows the standard of the staff. Have to give a mention to Natalie for everything over the years. When you're poorly kind people mean a lot

Fernhouse Surgery has been very good throughout the years that I’ve lived in the area and I can only recommend them highly. Dr. Mayet especially is a great doctor and looks after me so that I feel supported

The system seems rather disjointed. There are sometimes appointments available online and occasionally over the phone although there are apparently particular times which are good if you are in the know. If you do get through on the phone you are put through a for a form of triaging which you don’t have to go through if you book online. The reception staff are generally helpful although there is one who is more curt and takes less interest.

  • Some of the issue are in the technology. Systems for communicating with the surgery have changed considerably and you find out by accident. There is generally no explanation of the change or, more importantly, how the new version works. The design seems to be focused on making life easier for the NHS and not always for staff and patients. There is too much reliance on Smart Phone usage and too little structure for contacting the surgery other than turning up there. This site is painfully slow and exemplifies the state of technology in primary care.

Alway receive a friendly, helpful service. All receptionists, nurses, health care assistants and dispensary staff are efficient and a pleasure to meet.

  • If someone had actually bothered to look after my dad he wouldn't be dying and I wouldn't be in the position of supporting my mum as she heads into a breakdown so thank you for that!!!!

I have always found Practice staff to be pleasant and helpful, mindful of my needs. Getting an appointment within a reasonable time can obviously be difficult but I have had experience of staff and doctors fitting me in urgently when the need has arisen and for this I am grateful.

  • Reducing waiting times for appointments is an obvious response but the difficulties are well understood.
