In November 2017 I had an unprovoked Deep Vein Thrombosis. As these can be a "weak signal" for more serious conditions, I had the potential causes investigated. As a result of these, I have been diagnosed with T2c/T3 prostate cancer. All this diagnosis work, which was swift and comprehensive, was done through the NHS and completed in June 2018. I decided to try and find the best surgeon working in this field in my area (South Bucks) from whom to get advice. As a result of a couple of recommendations and internet searches, I obtained a consultation Mr Karim in late June 2018. Mr Karim was extremely accommodating about times and dates for the consultation: 2 alternative dates within a week of my initial contact were made available. For the consultation itself, I can't speak too highly of the whole experience. Mr Karim explained the meaning and implications of my test results in way that was clear and concise. He also took great care to ensure I understood the options open to me, and why he would recommend a specific method of treatment, taking account of my specific circumstances. What I found particularly reassuring was the way he portrayed the seriousness of my condition (potentially needing both surgery and radiotherapy), whilst giving confidence that available interventions can still provide good outcomes for me. One event stands out, in my mind, that illustrates Mr Karim's objective, helpful and ethical approach. When it was apparent that I would be funding private treatment myself, Mr Karim advised that staying within the NHS system, rather than taking the private route. This wasn't to do with the quality of care, but recognition that the cost of private treatment can escalate beyond the initial cost of surgery, and would probably be prohibitive for me. Unfortunately, Mr Karim doesn't work in the NHS in my area, but whilst he had no obligation to do so, he personally identified and contacted recommended surgeons within the NHS to whom I could be referred. I think Mr Karim's record speaks more clearly than I could do for his surgical excellence. But what statistics don't really speak to are the personal qualities of a surgeon - my experience is that Mr Karim's are of the highest order, and I would strongly recommend him to anyone is similar circumstances to my own. I consider my consultation fee one of the best investments I have ever made, and I am approaching my treatment with more confidence and reassurance than would otherwise have been the case.
