I had both my knees replaced four years ago by Mr Paul Trikha, an ex-colleague at ASPH. Therefore on researching having a replacement hip, I asked Paul whom he would recommend, the answer Mr Dean Michael. I initially saw Mr Michael at Ashford Hospital, but with the co-operation of my GP, we used the NHS Referral Service and I was then seen by Mr Michael at the Nuffield Woking Hospital where I had been an in-patient for both knees previously. Mr Michael arranged for my hip to be re-xrayed which showed even more deterioration and by now I was experiencing extensive pain and virtually housebound. Under his direction his excellent admin staff were able to give me an appointment for surgery within a month of seeing him. On the day of surgery, Mr Michael visited me and explained the procedure fully, was not rushed and took the time to answer any of my questions. He did tell me that in theatre he would be the one in a full "spacesuit" to prevent infection, illiciting a chuckle from me even during a heightened state of nerves! Post surgery he visited me once again to reassure me that the operation had gone extremely well and that the wonderful staff at the Nuffield would monitor my pain levels and adjust medication accordingly. The first night was a bit of a nightmare, but that's because I react to most analagesia and getting the post-operative pain under control proved initially very difficult. However, Mr Michael came into see me both on day 2 and on day 3, by which time I had already negotiated the stairs albeit on two crutches, had support at home and was therefore discharged. I saw Mr Michael at two weeks post-op and we were both delighted with my progress, no pain medication other than an occasional paracetamol or ibuprofen which was remarkable as I had been "popping" painkillers for weeks pre-op!! I was now down to using only one crutch and was hoping to move onto just a stick within the next week or two - achieved!! I have just seen Mr Michael six weeks post-op and the mobility in my hip is amazing, I'm walking further each day, I'm not using any walking aids and gradually building up the strength again in my right leg, but most of all I'm pain free!!! This remarkable surgeon with one of the warmest and reassuring smiles I have ever seen, and having worked in the NHS I've known a lot of surgeons, has taken the time to explain everthing, to always ask if I have any questions and has given me back my mobility freedom to now enjoy my retirement. Would I recommend Mr Michael - unreservedly!! I owe him a great debt of gratitude, thank you, two small words, but neverless heartfelt!
