I was very apprehensive about having cataract surgery plus drainage stents for my glaucoma but Mr Ratnarajan explained the procedure fully and I felt completely reassured. On admission the nurses,Lola in particular, explained the pre op procedure and Mr Ratnarajan came to my room to check all was well and explained that he would be asking me to turn my head at certain times during the procedure. I walked, accompanied by a theatre nurse, into the operating room and staff ensured that I was fully comfortable on the plinth. I wore a light theatre gown over my clothes and didn't have to remove my shoes and had a light blanket over my body. Mr Ratnarajan adjusted my head position before quite a voluminous head mask was placed over my face so just the eye in question was exposed - the other eye had had drops so vision was slight blurred. I did not feel claustrophobic in any way. During the procedure I was asked to 'focus' on the lights and Mr Ratnarajan talked me through each step so I knew what to expect and I was aware of progress too - so,I felt relaxed and reassured that all was going well. Finally I was wheeled back to my room in a chair with my eye covered with a plastic cup for protection and I was just so relieved I could see. The 'medication/ drops ' that were needed during the post op weeks were given to me by a nurse once I was back in my room, having light refreshments, and the frequency of applying them explained. Mr Ratnarajan checked all was well before I went home. His secretary telephoned the next day and he saw me the following week as an outpatient and fully checked my progress which was excellent on all accounts. I had no post op issues and apart from making sure I applied the drops, didn't bend down or lift anything heavy I was able to go about as normal and able to drive the following day."

Over 10 years ago the pressures in my left eye were so high that I needed surgery. I had an operation called Trabeculectomy, I knew I could never go through it again whatever happened. After a year or so the eye healed itself so I was back to square one. I was told 3 or 4 times another operation was required my answer was always no. But the time came when medication wasn’t helping. I saw Mr Gok Ratnarajan my consultant at the Queen Victoria Hospital East Grinstead who said I needed surgery and told me about a new procedure call Micro Shunt. I was very worried waiting for the operation but knew I had no other option. On the day of surgery I was welcomed by Mr Ratnarajan and his team,I felt more at ease and relaxed throughout the operation. No discomfort less than going to the dentist. All I though about was having a cup of coffee after which I received within 5 minutes. I have now been booked for my other eye, no worries. This is all thanks to Mr Gok Ratnarajan and team. I’ve been on cloud nine for the last four weeks since having multifocal replacement lens surgery with Mr Ratnarajan at The McIndoe Centre, East Grinstead. I now have fantastic eyesight!! No more contact lenses or reading glasses! Mr Ratnarajan was recommended to me as I required cataract surgery following laser treatment to prevent glaucoma. I wanted multifocal replacement lenses and these are not covered by the NHS. Mr Ratnarajan’s costs are worth every penny. I knew I was in safe hands, with a brilliant surgeon, expert in his field and with a caring, friendly, professional approach. At my initial appointment Mr Ratnarajan carefully went through the procedures and risks of the surgery. He encouraged me to ask any questions and said if I thought of any following the appointment I should email his secretary and he would reply. I got the jitters a few days before the first surgery date. I’m very squeamish about anything to with the eyes, but Sally, his secretary, must have passed on my concerns, and within an hour Mr Ratnarajan phoned me in my office to reassure me. The two surgeries were a breeze. Mr Ratnarajan was so calm and patient while performing the lens surgery and kept constantly letting me know that everything was going well. In no time at all, I was back in my room enjoying a lovely cup of tea with a yummy sandwich! I had no pain or discomfort and shortly after, was on my way home. Thank you very much Mr Ratnarajan, Nicola and Sally. The McIndoe Clinic is super with friendly, welcoming staff, and the private car park is an added bonus when arriving at the busy hospital entrance.

People complain about the NHS but my wife & I are in our mid to late 80s & have received nothing but the greatest care from our GPs , Hospitals as in patients or for day care , midwifery & childbirth or I'm A&E where ever we have lived . We have both attended Queen Victoria Hospital , East Grinstead for cataracts in both eyes my wife in recent years but I just the other day . I was diagnosed with cataracts & glaucoma in both eyes ,recently coming under the care of Mr G Ratnarajan who from the first consultation was , caring, considerate , understanding & understandable . Last Friday 7 December I attended the outpatients department for the removal of the cataract & the insertion of a stent to my right eye . From the moment of registration , to the subsequent preliminary examinations by the nursing staff I could not have received better care, respect or understanding . As for the theatre staff they were brilliant in their kindness , reassurance & help . The caution taken to make sure I was the right patient to receive the correct treatment was reassuring if not slightly amusing . Mr Ratnarajan's calm instructions to me , his commentary of what he was doing & his answers when able to my questions was reassuring & instructive . In short he was brilliant . The theatre staff were kind in their assistance after the procedure as we're all the staff nursing or orderlies in the recovery & discharge ward, The cup of tea was welcome but a G & T would have been better . Mr Ratnarajan's final checkout was reassuring & helpful , & I give top marks to the sister/senior nurse in charge of the discharge ward for her patience in dealing with me I was followed up today to be seen again in the near future for the current operation & I look forward if that is the right word to having the left eye attended to in a few months . I will then see the world in glorious technicolor again & perhaps dispense with glasses .In a nut shell The Queen Victoria team are the tops deserve a citation if not a sightation for brilliance & perfection . Gok is not only a very distinguished surgeon with outstanding skills he is very approachable and treats you more like a friend rather than a patient. I have had both my eyes operated on with complete success. The operations were carried out in a relaxed atmosphere and the procedure was fully explained to me as it proceeded.
