I went to this Dr with many questions about my symptoms. I felt patronised and dismissed, I left feeling very upset and as though I was wasting the clinic time. He did not take my concerns seriously and dismissed a query I had been given by both my GP & another consultant which was the reason for my referral to the department. I am fortunate to have gone on to another specialist hospital, thanks to my wonderful GP. The diagnosis the GP had originally queried was given straight away after a test that Dr Wilkinson could have referred me for but did not even wish to explore with me despite me referring back to symptoms a number of times. I am so concerned that this diagnosis was refused to be discussed and I was told just to get used to it and live with it and yet the indicators were sitting there within the results he had been given and he said the results are 'reassuring' when they were actually far from it. I am lucky to now have an action plan to work with and now know my symptoms had a very real medical cause.

Response from Dr Peter Wilkinson

I would like to apologise to the person who wrote these comments. It is clear that the consultation with me was not what he or she was entitled to. I feel it of importance that I learn from comments such as these but as they are anonymous I have no idea who wrote them and therefore cannot reflect on the consultation and see what I wrote in the letter summarising my thoughts. This means that any learning for me is of limited value. It would help me in particular to know what the test was that I should have requested and also what the eventual diagnosis proved to be. I would therefore like to meet the person who wrote these anonymous comments so that I can further understand how to improve my clinical practice in the future. One way would be to meet me at the hospital and to arrange this he or she would need to phone my secretary on 01932-723988 or contact the PALS team at the hospital on 01932 723553 who can arrange a meeting.
