I didn't get to meet Dr Johnston until the day of my surgery, where he came down an hour or two beforehand to meet me and talk through things (that's not a complaint, I understand that's how it's commonly done). Despite that, he was already fully aware of the concerns and questions I'd raised, a good sign for being proactively informed, and was able to talk through all of them and reassure me; it also gave me peace of mind that I knew he'd be looking out for specific possible complications I was worried about, although none happened in the end. He was a very reassuring presence, talked through everything that was going to happen, and before/while they put me under he helped keep me calm. It was my first general anaesthetic and, thanks largely to Dr Johnston, it wasn't a bad experience, and I'd be much more comfortable in future if I ever needed one again.
