I did not need spectacles until I was 73 but in 2017, when I was 76 years old I became unsure of the ground on my left side making it difficult to walk and balance.I went to my optician about it and though he could not find any change in my vision, he listened to me and wrote a letter to Mr Shah's department at Yeovil hospital.I was called in for tests after which Mr Shah wrote me a letter to say that I did have a treatable condition and I was invited to discuss it. At this interview I learned that a membrane over my retina was puckered and that a vitreoretinal and cataract surgery would correct my vision. Mr Shah explained what could be done to help me but I was alarmed at the thought of a needle in my eye and doubted that I could lie still for an hour to enable the operation to be done.Mr Shah assured me that I would not feel anything and gave me time to think and discuss things with my doctor.Eventually I made a rational decision to trust the expert surgeon and have the operation, which, contrary to all my fears, was totally painless. I was treated with compassion at every stage.I am now embarrassed when I think of my fearful, initial reaction, because when I removed my eye pad, the next morning, it felt like a miracle, as my vision was restored! I am so very grateful to Mr. Shah and his team. How lucky we are to have his dedicated service in our community. I had my pre op on 30 01 2018 and the actual operation on 15 03 2018 and I had a lot of anxiety between these dates imagining the worst and doubting my courage. If the pre op had been closer to the actual operation it would have been less of an ordeal for a timid patient.Though I appreciate how overloaded the N.H.S. is and how lucky my experience has been.
