I was referred by my GP for a two week wait appointment. I was understandably anxious about my possible condition and the treatment I may need to have. My appointment was dealt with in a compassionate, caring, understanding and calm way helping to alleviate my anxieties. The procedure and what would happen were explained to me in advance and throughout the procedure and I felt reassured that my needs and dignity were respected at all times. All the staff involved in my appointment were professional and caring throughout. There was nothing that could have been improved upon.
The only thing that would have been useful was that the appointment letter gave no indication of what info I may need to give in terms of history etc, and this would have saved time in the appointment.

Unfortunately the night staff were unaware that their work habits caused undue stress on us as patients...I shall bullet point to be succinct: *shouted down corridors *changed bin bags at 2am/6am *turned lights on at 6am shouting good morning (believe me after no nights sleep this wasnt pleasant) *left a buzzer ringing for over an hour, poor 92 yr old needed a wee *in and out of a door ALL NIGHT that had a very loud squeaking hinge *left me without a drink for 5 hours after asking *left me with no pain meds for 3 n half hours after asking *did not provide me with food form so I was very hungry the first night *old ladies crying to please let them sleep *banging drawers I was there for about 60 hrs and I did not sleep AT ALL although on morphine because the noise was atrocious. There were only four patients on this side of the ward but the first shift nurse did apologise after i had to get out of bed for someone to help the old lady get to the toilet. I have been diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of the lockdown and i have been in pain , having no sleep and not enough food didnt make this a pleasant experience....I have been extremely grateful for the fact at this scary time we have these ones that work through it but sadly lacked compassion. Only one nurse showed contempt to me when I said I was leaving she started stripping my bed at 1 am .....and I asked her to show kindness for the old ladies that were trying to sleep....she just answered oh well they are awake and carried on, I was disgusted. I cried very much for them, how can they heal with no sleep? It is a very sad situation.

After surviving A&E which my GP told me to go to I was spent one night in MAU where they checked me over and observed me for 24 hours . A bed became free on Colwell Ward and I arrived there in the middle of the night. SiSi a Chinese bank nurse accompanied me for my first chest X-ray and we had a wonderful talk about our different cultures and worlds. The Coronavirus was quite new to UK then but she lots to say about the Chinese dealing with. Then it was back to the ward and getting some treatment for the pneumonia. IV antibiotic and IV paracetamol were given every four hours by the most professional, caring, kind nurses mostly Filipino. The day staff were wonderful too but very stretched and understaffed. Night staff not so caring apart from Suzi who is an absolute gem. As I got stronger I got more involved with the patients and helped with feeding, holding their hands but was shocked at how many were ‘end of life’ and just disappeared down a corridor without family or friends to comfort them. What’s happened to our caring society? I hope this helps and if I’ve missed anyone out I apologise but Dr. Feather’s team are doing all they can with the resources they have to save lives on the Island. Oh and the hospital need some working monitors to stop the nurses pinching each other’s from other wards. So any millionaires out there you know what to get St.Marys for Easter.
