I have been extremely short-sighted all my life (I am now 76). My last sight test showed my sight to be -22 in my right eye and -14.50 in my left. This means that without contact lenses I was virtually blind. I was told I would need cataract surgery as I had cataracts forming in both eyes. I had surgery last year, both done within a few weeks of each other. I was nervous, but I needn't have worried. I was well looked after throughout. A nurse holds your hand while the op is being performed and tells you to squeeze hers if you feel any discomfort. I didn't need to do that at all. I can't praise the Westmorland General Hospital Eye Clinic nurses, surgeon and anaesthetist enough for their dedication to their patients. I was treated with a care and consideration which came naturally to them. It isn't a job to them - it is their vocation. The surgery was painless and when I took the eyepad off after the first operation I could not believe the clarity of vision and brightness of cololur that I could see. The next op was just as good, both eyes now giving me perfect, pin-sharp distance vision. I wear glasses for reading, which is not a hardship at all. I would always advise anyone facing cataract surgery to go ahead, don't be afraid, your life will be changed for the better.

I visited Mcindoe Centre on a number of occasions during April 2018 and was seen primarily by my consultant Mr Gokulan Ratnarajan in order that I could have the cataracts in both eyes removed an new lenses inserted. Mr Ratnarajan undertook the consultation and operations on both eyes. His manner is exemplary and he took time to explain the process and the potential outcomes. I am now in recovery mode with one final appointment with Mr Ratnarajan in a few weeks time. I am grateful to Mr Ratnarajan for his kindness, understanding and undoubted skills in this area and would, without reservation, recommend his services . An excellent all round experience which includes the care and attention received by the nursing staff and theatre staff during my visits.

No complaints about the actual surgery. However, the waiting period before surgery on the day of the appointment was unnecessarily long. This, together with a systemic lack of communication, made for an extremely stressful day. My husband's appointment was 11 am. He was taken along for surgery at about 4.20 pm. Although we knew beforehand that surgery would not be done until the afternoon, we didn't anticipate having to wait over 5 hours. It seems all the afternoon appointments were given the same attendance time, despite having to be seen in turn. We were last on the list. A helpful nurse advised that next time we should ask where we are on the list and then, if appropriate, come in later than the appointment time. I don't think the onus should be on the patient to do this - and in any case most patients would be shy to do so in case they were sent home for failing to keep to the written appointment time.
