What was good about my cancer care was the efficiency and that no appointment was cancelled. Everything including my procedure undertook by Mr Chitsabesan was all done on the dates given. Regarding my chemotherapy treatment once every 3 weeks was all on time but it was distressing having the cannula done by junior nurses when I was particularly difficult to get into. It would have been helpful if the more senior nurses always did the cannulas on people that were hard to get into as they were able to do it first time. Also the bands for any allergies mostly weren't available so it was up to you to let the nurses know verbally what allergies you had from certain medications. Regarding the hospital, overall the care was good but the food was terrible. It would be good if the catering could be looked at and changed.

I have been receiving care from both the cardiac and colorectal teams and have been delighted with the way I have been treated throughout. I have actually written a long thank you letter to Simon Morritt, the Chief Executive of the York & Scarborough Teaching Hospitals FT, and feel sure my positive comments will be passed to the people I mentioned. There were many of these, however I would like to make special mention of Dr Maria Paneta (Acute Care Consultant) and Jon Paul (a junior member of the theatre team at Scarborough). Dr Paneta has been excellent at keeping me informed about progress and next steps with the various investigations that have been undertaken. She has a wonderful, positive and caring style. Jon Paul came to talk to me when I arrived in the waiting area of the theatre suite. I was feeling somewhat anxious but the conversation with Jon helped me to relax. He clearly loves his job and is a great credit to the Trust.

I find the staff are caring, friendly and reassuring. I felt very safe in their hands whilst having surgery and recovering on the ward from that and also now that I am having chemotherapy.

The consultant and nursing staff were excellent. I was shocked at how overworked the staff were and how understaffed the ward was. No wonder the NHS is in crisis. In the end my treatment was excellent and I can't complain but the lack of information and time spent waiting was of concern. The ward was scruffy and the shower facilities were like a 70s Butlins. One aspect troubled me greatly. When the permanent staff left on an evening there appeared to be agency staff drafted in. Some of these were young men who frankly shouldn't have been near patients. They spoke openly to each other about how the evening rates were better than the day and they reeked of cigarette smoke. One old man was told to wait until the morning for a cup of tea and another man in his 80s was roughly handled in a bed manoeuvre, crying out until a nurse came along and intervened. Through those nights I frankly did not feel safe.

From being diagnosed with Cancer in February 2021, the service and care I received from York hospital was excellent. The Oncology Team where fabulous making me feel at ease every step of the way. Too many people to give a personal thank you to and apologies for not mentioning you all.... But special thanks to Dr. Mohammed in Oncology for his care and great communication. Nurse Jim in Oncology you are fabulous, caring and so reassuring. Debbie and Charlie in Oncology. Thank you to Karen, Nursing Assistant who really looked after me before and after my Hickman line was fitted. Dr. Hassan who removed my line and saw me after my Surgery. Dr. Chitsabesan "thank you" is to small a word, but I say it with the biggest meaning. Thank you to the behind the scene workers in Haematology, Histology, Microbiology. So many to thank. York Hospital, you're the best!
